Finished reading “Follow Your Heart: Finding a Purpose in Your Life and Work” by Andrew Matthews.
The most important thing I found in this book was that it is never selfish to do what you really want.
(1)You choose your attitude. If you want to, you can enjoy almost any job, and (2)If you work at something you love, you’ll probably be happier, you’ll more likely to succeed and you’ll probably make more money.
So first I say: “Choose to like whatever you are doing at the moment.” Then I say: “Go follow your heart.” Is there a contradiction here? No. In the short term, you often need to make the best of a situation. If you need the cash, you may need to stay with your current job while you plan your future. In the long term, you will only be fulfilled if you do what feels right for you.
It is okay to make the best of your current job, but you have to keep in mind that in the long run, the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you really want.
But most people doesn’t know what they really want to do.
Why?
You did what was “expected”.
If you smother your passion for long enough, you won’t even remember what you really love. A voice inside will remind you that it’s selfish to do what you really want.
If you look over the world, you will find many people who doesn’t have work in spite of their will.
You will find many people who doesn’t have a chance to choose their jobs to live on.
And you may feel that it is selfish to do what you really want.
But doing something you don’t like helps no one.
It won’t help people who don’t have work, or people who can’t choose their jobs, and it won’t help yourself.
No one will live your life in place of you, so you don’t have to sacrifice you and your heart for somebody else.
You don’t have to waste your life living someone else’s life.
And also, you don’t have to fear that somebody might hate you for doing what you really want.
You can wear yourself out trying to get everyone to like you, or agree with you, and in the end, they don’t like you and you don’t know who you are.
Ultimately, you can only depend on your inner guidance – in other words, follow your own heart.
What you really need is not a friend who will hate you if you choose to do what you really want.
It is a courage to follow your heart, and the faith to carry through what you think is right.
